The Birmingham Small Arms factory was established in the Small Heath area of Birmingham 1861 and as the name suggests manufactured weapons. Around the turn of the century they started making bicycles and progressed onto motorcycles a few years later. BSA went on to be one of the world's largest producers of motorcycles up until its demise in the early 1970s.
The BSA Hornet was developed by BSA in 1964 as purpose built off road and desert racer motorcycle in response to demand from the US market for a stripped down Lightning with more power. BSA actually produced two versions of the bike to satisfy the demands of American riders, the East Coast and West Coast models. Although they could be used on public roads, BSA Hornets were supplied without headlights or taillights and with straight through exhaust pipes, high level on the east coast model and low TT pipes on the west coast version and fitted with twin carburettors. The 6 volt coil ignition system was designed to allow easy conversion to add lights for road use but the exhaust pipes needed to be fitted with mufflers to become road legal. This excellent 1967 West Coast model is finished in Cherokee Red and was the last production year for the Hornet. Restored some years ago by Derek Gothard, the bike and its rebuild was featured in the July 2014 issue of the Classic Bike Guide. Part of a private collection for a number of years it has been run and ridden regularly by its enthusiast owner and comes supplied with a current V5C.
