Announced at the 1983 Geneva show, the Vanden Plas line of the Maestro was the top of the range offering. At launch the Maestro Vanden Plas was powered by the transverse 'R' series 1598cc engine with a traditional 'end-on' Volkswagen 5-speed manual transmission. With its single SU carburettor, power was stated as 81bhp at 5500rpm. Suspension was by Macpherson struts at the front and trailing arms at the rear with coil springs all round. Rack and pinion steering and servo assisted front disc and rear drum brakes were fitted. The Maestro Vanden Plas ceased production in 1988 after some 15,552 had been made, although examples of this 1980's family hatchback are very thin on the ground now.
Finished in Opaline green with rare original Sandpiper Raschelle cloth interior, this series one Maestro was manufactured in 1984 and it was first UK registered in January that year. Fitted with the 1598cc four-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual gearbox, the Maestro has had only two former keepers. In current ownership since 2002, the VDP shows a recorded mileage of approximately 82,000 miles. Offered for restoration, the Maestro is accompanied by a quantity of spare parts supplied by Rimmer Brothers including new front and rear bumpers, wheel trims and servicing items.
