Introduced in Autumn 1969 for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was "a rather late response" to the Ford Mustang, which debuted in April 1964. Even so, Chrysler intended the new Challenger as the most potent pony car ever, and like the less expensive Barracuda, it was available in a staggering number of trim and option levels, and with virtually every engine in Chrysler's inventory.
The Challenger's longer wheelbase, larger dimensions, and more luxurious interior were prompted by the launch of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, likewise, a bigger, more luxurious, and more expensive pony car aimed at affluent young American buyers. The 110 in (2,800 mm) wheelbase was 2 in (51 mm) longer than the Barracuda's, and the Dodge differed substantially in its sheet metal, much as the Cougar differed from the shorter-wheelbase Mustang.
The exterior design was penned by Carl Cameron, who was also responsible for the exterior designs of the 1966 Dodge Charger. Cameron based the 1970 Challenger grille on an older sketch of a stillborn 1966 Charger prototype that was to have a turbine engine. A total of 165,437 first-generation Challengers were sold, with just 11,354 of those manufactured in 1974, the final model year before production ceased.
Presented in Cherry Red with a black interior, DBY 961M was manufactured in the final production year of the Series 1 Challengers, 1974, and registered in the UK in 2010. The car has been in the same family for approximately 6 years, having been owned by the current custodian’s father before being passed to him and displays 98,115miles on the odometer.
Currently kept in a humidity and temperature controlled storage facility, DBY 961M hosts a 7.2L Mopar 440 engine, the largest and most powerful engine offered by Dodge for the Challenger series (Including the R/T). This particular Mopar 440, however, as well as the chassis and other components have been subject to extensive modifications in the US to the cost of approximately $22,000, bringing DBY 961M to a claimed approximate 600bhp over the stock 390bhp. The engine has also been subject to overhaul by the previous owner in the UK, approximately 2 years prior to it’s purchase by the current owner’s father and the car was regularly used on the drag strip.
Included with the car is a large folder containing invoices and receipts for the work carried out as well as invoices for previous services, with recent work including a new 3’’ exhaust, starter motor and a full service including new HT Leads, spark plugs and a new battery. With prices of the collectible R/Ts rising rapidly, this presents a rare opportunity to acquire a powerful version of these American classics.
