Ducati was established in 1926 by Antonio Ducati and his sons, initially producing electrical components. After WW2 they moved into motorcycles with the Cucciola, essentially a pushbike with a clip-on engine but by the 1960s had become associated with performance bikes selling a range of sporty 250 and 350 singles. In response to the demand for larger capacity bikes chief engineer Fabio Taglioni designed the classic V Twin bevel drive engine first used in the 1971 GT750. This proved to be an immediate success, helped considerably by Paul Smarts win in the 1972 Imola 200 race. This started a long tradition of race-winning V twins that have gone on to dominate World Superbike racing over the years.
The 996SPS suffix stood for ‘Sport Production Special’ and was basically a homologation special to allow various components to be legal for use in the WSB racing series. The engine produced around 124 bhp, 12bhp more than the standard 996 and was much stronger than anything that Ducati had produced at that time. They designed a much higher specification chassis for the SPS, the wheels had five spokes but were lighter than the standard three spoke design and the front and rear suspension was supplied by Ohlins with an adjustable steering head to allow for geometry changes, making it suitable for different riding styles or race tracks. This 996 has never been ridden or run from new and is number 1144 of the 2000 released to the public, part of a private collection for a number of years the speedo reading is only 1 mile. Supplied with both keys and all the instruction books, including the factory power chip and set up tool and a genuine Ducati paddock stand, the bike has never been registered but the vendor has recently applied for a V5C.
