The introduction of the hatchback Ambassador addressed failings inherent in the booted design of its predecessor, the `wedge' Princess. Whilst looking superficially similar and sharing the same doors and inner structure, there was far more to the incoming model than just slope-away headlamps and a lift-up rear. A substantial and effective re-design, it was proof that the Austin Rover Group lacked resources rather than ingenuity. Production began in 1982, yet the car only continued until 1984, and with a scant 43,500 sold it was never a common sight. The Ambassador was the sole car in the Austin-Rover range to make exclusive use of the O-Series engine throughout its life.
This HLS Ambassador was manufactured in 1984 and was first registered in March of that year. Fitted with the O-Series engine in 2-litre form it provided greater power, better fuel economy and improved smoothness than the B-series it replaced. It is mated to a manual transmission. The Austin is finished in Opaline green with Brushwood Corduroy interior upholstery.
With only three former keepers, the Ambassador has a indicated mileage of only 38,393 miles, which is thought to be genuine. Previously part of the Jaguar Land Rover collection, the HLS was sold off and since recommissioned, further benefitting from a recent carburettor overhaul. Fitted with new diamond cut alloy wheels in March 2021, the original steel wheels are also provided with the car. The engine bay has a heavy covering of degreaser. Offered from a private collection, the Ambassador is accompanied by a current V5C.
