The Morris J2 was something of a revolutionary commercial vehicle for the marque. Bearing influence from emerging market competition from Ford, the J2 boasted a monocoque, chassis free body and a forward control engine layout, resulting in greatly improved space for the driver and front seat passengers. This paired with the use of a strong, albeit somewhat lacking in the power department, 1489cc BMC B-Series engine meant that the J2 sold in remarkable numbers, however very few of them have found their way into the modern era in good standing.
First registered on 7th June 1963, this Morris J2 is believed to be the bearer of a camper conversion from new and the beneficiary of what we believe to be a Highwayman model by Bluebird Caravans Limited of Poole, Dorset. The accompanying buff logbook records it as a 'Dormobile', a manufacturer of different conversions, however, the name was often used generically. The buff logbook also records a number of owners also in the Staffordshire area, so it has resided in Staffordshire most, if not all of its life. The previous owner was a celebrated WWII war hero, prisoner of war, fighter with the Yugoslav resistance and a former chauffeur to the Queen Elizabeth II, according to some accompanying 'Burton Mail' clippings. Subsequently, the current owner acquired the van in July of 2010, whereupon a restoration was begun. Benefitting from preparation down to bare metal and a repaint and re-trim in complementing Green, it is now fitted with an awning, a working period gas hob, cold and hot water facility, a leisure battery and a Kenlowe engine fan, as part of the specification. Very few of these conversions appear to have survived. In 2025, it's perfect for festivals or Goodwood. Fitted with a 1,622cc B Series four-cylinder engine '910 WBF' is being offered with an original Highwayman brochure, an original period Morris J2 'book pack' and the old buff logbook, blue V5C and the current V5C.
