The Bullet had originally been introduced during 1949 with a capacity of 350cc, being offered in road going , trials and scrambles forms and was joined in 1953 by a larger 500cc version offered in the three applications. 1958 witnessed the introduction of a revised 500cc variant that adopted a new alloy cylinder head with a raised compression ratio. The new engine rejuvenated the Bullet, restoring its performance to a level that justified the "sports single" title, with, according to a road test carried out by "Motor Cycling" , a top speed of 91 mph being available.
Although Royal Enfield never achieved the same level of success in the states as AMC, BSA, Triumph and Norton their off road products were well regarded and had been available with both Royal Enfield and Indian badges, however, by 1959 the standard scrambler was struggling against machines such as the Goldie, G80CS and TR series Triumph's in the increasingly important American off road market. To address this Royal Enfield announced a new variant for the 1959 season aimed at the North American off road market. Called the Fury, the new machine utilised the "big head" 500cc engine in tuned form with a larger inlet port fed by an Amal GP carburettor, lightened flywheels and a further increase to the compression ratio. Delivering a claimed 40 bhp it was suggested that the machine could attain a top speed of 100mph. The cycle parts followed the established Royal Enfield scrambles pattern and a full lighting set was offered as an option. Production is thought to have continued until 1963 and it is believed that only 191 Furies were built over the four years that it was available.
This example was purchased by the vendor from the United States and taken to Spain. It is offered in good restored condition and is equipped with a speedometer and silencer for road use. The Amal GP carburettor has been replaced by a less aggressive instrument in the interests of usability.
