Lot details
Registration No: BLO 360
Chassis No: G54108
Mot Expiry: March 2008

Bridging the gap between the Longbridge based manufacturer's renowned 7hp and 12hp models, the Austin 10hp was launched in 1932. Topping the sales charts throughout the 1930s, the newcomer was based around a sturdy ladder frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and cable-operated four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by an 1125cc sidevalve four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, it was reputedly capable of 55mph and 35mpg. Available with a range of open and closed pressed-steel body styles (all of which located occupants between the axles) the model was subject to continual development. Thus, in 1934 it gained a stronger chassis, synchromesh on the top two gears and 12 volt electrics. Introduced at the end of that year, the Austin 10 Lichfield Saloon was visually distinguished by a painted radiator cowl and protruding boot (which also housed the spare wheel). While, mechanically it benefited from the addition of synchromesh to second gear. In production for less than three years, surviving Lichfields are a rare sight on today's roads.

Finished in maroon over black with maroon leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork and paintwork. Though, he notes that there is "a small crack to the engine block", an area of "crazed paintwork near the boot" and "some wear to two tyres". Believed but not warranted to have rolled off the assembly line in circa November 1934 and as such to be one of the earliest Lichfields, we are further informed that 'BLO 360' was first registered on January 2nd 1935. Apparently "rescued by former owner from a scrapyard in Haywards Heath, Sussex during May 1959 and bought for £4 10s 0d", the sliding-head saloon has been in the current ownership since May 1989. Known as 'Evvie', it is said to have been "featured in several issues of the Austin Ten Drivers' Club magazine". Thought to have obtained the engine and speedometer from a 1932 Austin 10hp at some time in its life, this appealing Lichfield is offered for sale with MOT certificate and historic class (free) road tax both valid until March 2008.
