Lot details Registration No: NPA860W Chassis No: GVGEJ1AG522348 Mot Expiry: July 2010
The LE model is known as the final incarnation of the MG B, built to commemorate 18 years of production of the most successful and best-selling British sportscar of all time. Practicality and character were core B values, but by the end of the 1970s, the gruff growl of an MG B exhaust signified an aging design language compared to the latest wave of cars for the sporting driver, the hot-hatchbacks. LE's were often rated as collector cars from the word go, following the decision to shut the Abingdon assembly plant on 10th September 1979. The closure took place on 23rd October 1980, with most LE models not registered until after that date - the model was only announced during October 1980 - making a special place for the LE in any enthusiast's heart. Many went straight into the hands of private collectors with an eye on the future. The unique-to-model deep front spoiler and special coach line graphics denote LE specification. Metallic pewter was the only colour available for the GT and metallic bronze for the Roadster version. Standard mechanicals were fitted and the cars wore five-spoke alloy wheels similar in design to the Triumph Stag. They were previously an optional extra. Coupled to 185/70 tyres the LE had better grip than the standard offering. The changes gave these run-out cars a more contemporary look. Inside the GT featured MG's grey/black deckchair-striped nylon, and the car cost £6576. Reputedly supplied new by University Motors, this particular example was first registered on 11th February 1981 and over the course of the last twenty-eight years is understood to have covered just 13,100 miles. An accompanying letter relates that a Mr Fifield of Warlingham purchased the MG on 23rd March 1986 with a recorded mileage of 1,700 and since then it has had just two further keepers. Described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork, recent work has apparently seen 'NPA 860W' treated to "a service, new fuel pump and replacement brake pipes". Said to drive "almost like a new car" and to have been "only used for Club events" during the current stewardship, this nicely presented MG B GT LE is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2010.
