The Centaur

Lot 22

1999 Pilgrim Sumo 427 Cobra Evocaton

Estimated at £11,000 - £13,000

Lot details
Registration No: B717MWV
Chassis No: P5994806946
Mot Expiry: Feb 2009

Introduced in 1987, the Pilgrim Sumo was styled after that undisputed king of the 'muscle cars', the AC Cobra 427. Initially based around Ford running gear, the well-engineered, easy-to-build Sumo soon became the best-selling Cobra evocation. Coming on stream in 1989, the MK2 version boasted a sturdier multiple-tube perimeter-frame chassis and the option of independent rear suspension. While a year later, Pilgrim bowed to customer pressure for a Sumo that could accommodate the legendary Rover 3.5 litre alloy V8. Still one of Pilgrim's most popular kits, this latter derivative featured a different pedal box, radiator and revised engine / gearbox mountings.
Great fun to drive and less 'nose heavy' than some of its bigger-capacity V8 rivals, the Rover-powered Sumo further benefited from disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering.

Finished in blue with grey upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its 3.5 litre V8 engine, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork and paintwork (while, he rates the five-speed manual gearbox and wheels / tyres as "good"). Reportedly "built by Pilgrim Cars Ltd in 1999 for Mr L. Doe of London who used it for an Italian honeymoon tour and pleasure motoring", 'B717 MWV' entered the current ownership on 31st December 2001. Said to have since been used for "summer shows and rallies including two London-to-Brighton kit car runs" but to have been kept "SORN registered in the winter months", the Sumo is judged by the seller to be "a very good all round fun car". Riding on steel wheels and sporting a rollover bar, this handsome Cobra evocation apparently has the further advantages of "full wet weather equipment" and a "Thatcham Category 2 alarm / immobilizer". Stated to have covered less than 9,000 miles, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until February 2009 and road tax valid until July 2008.
