The superb E30 series of BMW compact saloons and coupes ran from 1982 until 1994. Offering a combination of high performance, exquisite style and full four-seater convenience, the BMW E30 was an instant success and, to many enthusiasts, were the last of the real driver-focused models from BMW and have as such been recognised as a true modern classic.
Baur is a Karosserie or coachbuilder in Stuttgart, Germany, which was established in 1910, producing not only a huge number of BMW Cabriolets that they are famous for, but notably a number of vehicles that are today seen as extremely historically important. All Porsche 959s were actually produced at Baur, not at the Porsche Stuttgart plant, on an assembly line with Porsche inspectors overseeing the finished bodies. Most of Porsche's special-order interior leatherwork was also done by the workers at Baur. In addition, most of the 450 or so BMW M1s (after Lamborghini was unable to fulfil its contractual obligations) and even at one time all suspension components for the Audi Quattro.
In 1971 they began production of the safer "Targa-style" body with the 2002. Originally an aftermarket option available through BMW dealers, the E21 3 Series TC1 was built with full factory authorisation, and covered under the factory warranty. The roll-bar version or "Top Cabrio" (TC) continued with the E30 TC2 even after Baur developed the BMW E30 Convertible design for BMW, and which BMW built. The cost of a Baur conversion was extremely expensive at the time (£3,795.00 at 1987 prices), so it was not uncommon to see DIY conversions done by backstreet garages on standard E30 shells. Genuine Baurs carry an identification plate from the factory, located on the left side door shut. The plate will detail the factory name (Karosserie Baur) as well as the build number of the car, and the specified roof colour.
First registered in 1987, this genuine Baur 320i Cabriolet is one of 300 UK cars presented in Silver with contrasting Grey pattern interior and the all-important manual gearbox. This particular example benefits from complementary BBS wheels, although does also include the original bottle top wheels in very good condition. Recently subject to a service by Richard RPM including hydraulic tappet adjustment, the car now displays 100,205 miles on the odometer.
Included with the vehicle is 2 sets of keys with spare dealer keyring, the original bookpack including warranty terms, alarm guarantee and operating instructions, Baur cabriolet booklet, owners handbook and BMW Service booklet. Also included is an impressive collection of invoices and receipts from both BMW main dealers and specialists from 1996 to present, MOTs dating back to 1993 at 27,671 miles and the V5C document which displays 7 former keepers. The vendor rates the condition of the bodywork, engine, electrical equipment, paintwork, transmission and interior trim all as ‘Very Good’.
