Lot details Registration No: 399 YUB Chassis No: TA0784 Mot Expiry: Nov 2011
MG's venerable T Series cars began with the TA of 1936. More gentle evolution than revolution, they furthered the concept of a simple body-on-chassis, two-seater sports car embodied by the outgoing PB. A favourite of British and American WWII airmen, the early T Series models have been immortalised by the films of the period - no shot of a Spitfire or Hurricane at rest on an English airfield being complete without a TA or TB in the foreground.
The TA Special offered, was manufactured in October 1936. A barn find of recent years, it has subsequently been turned into a one-off tribute to the Q-Type by marque specialists XPAG Engineering. The new all-aluminium 'Boat Tail' body and restored chassis are finished in dark Blue. The MG is powered by an overhauled and balanced XPAG engine enlarged to 1350cc. The Laystall Lucas alloy cylinder head is modified for unleaded fuel. There is also: a sports camshaft; matched distributor; twin SU H2 carburettors and stainless steel exhaust. The suspension features new Andre-Hartford dampers at the front and reconditioned Armstrong units at the rear.
The steering box has been restored and a new 15.5-inch Blumels steering wheel fitted. The brakes have been overhauled and the standard drums replaced with Alfin units. The front axle, differential and gearbox have all been extensively refurbished. All brightwork has been re-chromed, the headlamp reflectors re-silvered and a new radiator fitted. A new period-style fascia has been created and anodised in light grey, and equally period-style instrumentation and controls installed. The interior is freshly upholstered and the Special equipped with a split tonneau in blue mohair. The restoration of this delightful MG has only just been finished and it comes complete with full photo history of the extensive work. '399 YUB' is taxed, MOT'd and ready to enjoy.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
