“The most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car” - LJK Setright on the Citroen 2CV
The development of Citroën's ever-charming Deux Chevaux dates back to 1936 - a couple of years after the company had been rescued by Michelin. It was intended to motorise the large number of French farmers still relying on horses and carts, and it was research carried out amongst France's largely rural population that determined the following unique design brief: a low-priced, rugged 'umbrella on four wheels' that would enable four peasants to drive 110lb of farm goods to market at 31mph in clogs and via muddy, unpaved roads; including transporting eggs across a ploughed field without breaking them. Production was delayed by WWII, but began in 1948, following which 3,872,583 2CVs were manufactured via 11 factories across the world (including one in Slough, England) between 1948 and 1990, by which time, the ageing design had been defeated by contemporary legislation.
We are indebted to the vendor for the following description:
The car was found (c.2004 with c.84,986km displaying) by a Scottish car enthusiast who had a holiday home in Bourg, France; it belonged to his neighbour and a restoration was started before he purchased the car in 2008. He imported the car to the UK in early 2015 (it is understand that he drove it from Bourg to Edinburgh himself), and sold it to a family friend, and fellow car enthusiast in Northern Ireland shortly thereafter. Purchased in November 2015, it was the intention to take the 2CV back to our extended family’s home in France, but those plans never materialised. It has been kept in storage (a heated garage) since, with only occasional short (summer & dry day) drives, the car is in “original” condition with a replacement hood and seat upholstery, both done whilst in France. It has just been kept running with no modifications or restoration. Could there be any more such original condition 2CVs in running order available in the UK? Now, in need of the space, the time has come for it to find a new home for someone to maintain it in its original condition or to carry out a restoration. It is being offered with documentation going back to 2004.
