Lot details

Registration No: BYN 679
Chassis No: AM 19023
MOT: Exempt

  • Rare and charming Aero Minx presented in Light Blue with complementing Blue leather interior
  • Subject to two-year restoration completed in 2016 totalling c.£18,000
  • Well known to the Minx Register and offered from a private collection

Hillman's new Minx, announced in 1931, was to provide the platform for the company's first small sports car. Fitted with a lower chassis which was under-slung at the rear, shorter wheelbase and a slightly more powerful engine, the 'Aero' Minx featured fashionable streamlined coachwork in 'Art Deco' style. Introduced at the 1932 London Motor Show, initially in saloon form with coachwork by Carbodies of Coventry, the stylish Aero Minx would also become available in two-seater sports or coupe form. Dropheads went on to be produced by various coachbuilders including Kevill-Davies & March.

Rarely offered for sale nowadays, this particular example is well known to the Aero Minx Register. Purchased by its current owner in June 2014 as a non-runner requiring restoration, ‘BYN 679’ was shortly after subject to a two year body-off restoration which included replacement oak floors and ash framing in the aluminium bodywork, a replacement fuel tank, new wiring loom, wheels painted with new tyres, the car painted, interior re-upholstered with premium hide, chrome work re-finished in triple plated chrome, a replacement screen and further finishing touches. During the restoration, the engine was also re-bored and overhauled with the aluminium head re-finished, the gearbox overhauled and the springs serviced. As the vendor intended never to sell the car, no receipts were kept, but he informs us that the total expenditure on the restoration was in the region of £18,000 on top of the £14,000 the car was purchased for and there is some photographic evidence to support. Now offered for sale simply due to lack of use, this presents an opportunity to acquire a rare, interesting and beautiful motor vehicle for the summer.

Accompanied with the vehicle is a history file containing a Hillman Minx 1935 instruction book, ‘Introduction to Safe Speed’ leaflet, 1935 Hillman Minx pamphlet and flyer, Hillman Minx book of spare parts, Hillman ‘Manual of the Minx’, a small collection of owner’s magazines and some literature on the Minx. As well as this, a duplicate log book, a collection of MOTs dating back as far as 1976, some Aero Minx Register newsletters and some historical photographs of the car. The vendor rates the condition of the engine and electrical equipment as ‘Very Good’, the bodywork and interior trim as ‘Good’, with the paintwork and transmission ‘Average’.
