Mercedes have been producing an SL model or range of models since 1954 when the landmark 300SL was unveiled. The similarly styled 190 followed in 1955, completing the first generation of cars. The second generation SLs began with the 230 of 1963. It was distinguished by its lower waistline, big curved screens and a distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname of `pagoda top'. Over its nine years of production, the second generation SL's engine grew in capacity from 2.3 litres (230SL) to 2.8 litres (280SL). The larger, third generation SL (R107) was launched in 1971, initially with just a 3.5-litre engine (350SL) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The car featured a two-door monocoque bodyshell with independent suspension all round - double wishbones, coil springs and anti-roll bar at the front and semi-trailing arms, coil springs and anti-roll bar at the rear. The power assisted steering was Daimler-Benz's own recirculating ball system. Braking was by discs all round - ventilated on the front. Over its seventeen-year reign, the R107 range was powered by no less than eight different engines. The 450SL option was available from 1973 to 1980. Its V8 produced some 225bhp at 5000rpm and 278lbft of torque at 3000rpm - sufficient to endow the model with effortless acceleration and a top speed of 135 mph.

'KWU 953N' is a right-hand drive 450SL built in 1975. It features Silver bodywork and a Blue interior. The vendor, the third owner, acquired the Mercedes in December 2006 from a Mr G Funk, since when the water pump has been renewed (2009), the radiator reconditioned (2010) and new plugs leads, distributor cap and four tyres fitted (2010). She informs us that the Blue hood is very good, save for a small crack in the Perspex window. The car currently rides on the optional alloy wheels and comes complete with the original steel wheels, Blue-coloured factory hardtop, owners' manuals, thirteen old MOT certificates and an extensive service history that apparently confirms the total indicated mileage of 76,000. The 450SL is taxed until the end of November and MOT'd into June of next year.
