MOT: Exempt
Introduced in 1965, the MGB GT was a more comfortable and versatile proposition than its roadster sister. With a top speed of over 100mph courtesy of its 1798cc B-series engine and a capable chassis featuring independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering and disc / drum brakes, the enclosed 2+2-seater merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'.
Chassis ‘GHD5456989G’ was supplied new to the home market, being registered new on the 1st May in 1978. Known to have been residing for some twenty years between two neighbouring addresses in barns on the Lancashire moors, the MG had been partially stripped in preparation for restoration. Purchased by the vendor, a serial classic car restorer, in 2022, he thereafter embarked upon a comprehensive restoration beginning in October 2022. The shell was taken back to bare metal and fully restored with new panels grafted in as required, including rear wing and boot floor repairs, before the MG was lavished with a full repaint in attractive Brooklands Green paintwork.
Mechanically, the vendor embarked on bringing the MG to a ‘fast road’ specification, including the engine completely overhauled, bored out to 1950cc, with a fast road cam, uprated roller rockers, and an unleaded cylinder head. The mechanical work continued with the suspension completely renewed with Bilstein dampening and new springs; new brakes throughout with new master cylinder; the overdrive gearbox and differential checked and tightened; new sections of wiring; and renewed fuel system. The attention then turned to the MGB GT's cosmetics with a full new interior supplied with Black seats with White piping and Black carpets; new chrome trim; new windscreen; and new bumpers.
With some £5,000 spent in parts alone, the restoration was completed in February 2025, and since the MG's return to the road, ‘BGB 979S’ has covered a mere 50 ‘running in’ miles. Accompanied by a large collection of invoices from the restoration period, there is also a vast selection of images throughout the restoration and a current V5C document. Freshly restored to a ‘fast road’ specification, this barely run-in MGB GT is surely one to consider for anyone in the market for a notably nice example.
