Introduced in 1965 the Bristol 409 sported a new trapezoidal grille but was otherwise stylistically indebted to its 408 predecessor (the two models' production lives overlapping somewhat). Under the skin the newcomer witnessed some real changes in terms of improvements in ride quality, performance and general refinement. Based around the marque's familiar 114-inch wheelbase box-section platform chassis equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a `live' Salisbury rear axle and four-wheel disc brakes, the 409 employed notably softer spring rates. However, the Saloon's poise and handling remained assured thanks to some skilfully revised geometry and more rearward-biased drivetrain mounts. Sourced from Chrysler, its 5.2 litre OHV V8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission were smooth and quiet in operation. Yet with a claimed 250bhp and 340lbft of torque on tap, the four-seater was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.8 seconds and 132mph. Guaranteed exclusivity by its £4,989 price tag, the 409 boasted a luxurious but understated cabin. Only available for four years, just 74 are thought to have been made.

First registered on 13th December 1966 and one of some 74 examples built, the Bristol Owner’s Club records reveal 'OYY 25D' as having special order discreet 'trafficator repeater lights' and Silver over Grey paint with Red upholstery. Displaying some 102,000 credible miles and its last MOT actually expiring on 9th August 2022, little is known about the early history of the 409 other than there were 4 keepers recorded between January 1978 and 1990. The old blue V5 states it was owned by Mr D. Pether of Gibralter between 1982 and 1990, before Mr R. M Soames of Harrow purchased the car in 1990.

There are extensive records on file for work carried out in the ownership of Mr Pether, significantly with Bristol Cars at Filton in 1988 for in excess of c.£10,000, including a bare metal respray, door and boot alignment repair. A further £3,400 invoice with Bristol Cars in 1987, included a new headlining and carpet. Mr Soames’ ownership shows receipts for service items and general upkeep of the car with Bodycraft, Ashford, Middlesex. More recent work has included the shot blasting and powder coating of the wheels in 2019 and calliper seals in 2018. ‘OYY 25D’ is offered with a collection of receipts and old MOT history, an old blue V5 on file and the current V5C.
