Thanks to their success in World Superbikes, Ducati had, by the early 1990's achieved an unassailed position as the supplier of the worlds most desirable sports bikes, however, their product range was limited and whilst many riders lusted after a 916 or 748, the cost and more importantly their focused nature deterred them. In an effort to broaden their market base Ducati introduced a range of naked roadsters inspired by the "streetfighter" cult, that has collectively formed over 50% of their sales since their introduction and was largely responsible for creating a new market sector.
The new machines employed the same chassis and engines as their sporting cousins, but were stripped of the full fairings. Seats capable of accommodating a pillion comfortably were fitted and the clip-ons and rear-sets of the sports bikes gave way to conventional handlebars affording a less extreme riding position. Three variants were offered initially, typed the M600, M750 and M900, the numbers referring to the engine capacity and all bore the name "Monster". As with the sports bikes the ancillary components were of the highest quality. The engines benefited from some tuning tweeks aimed at improving flexibility and torque output. Enthusiastic road tests followed, the machines were comfortable in a way that no recent Ducati twin had been, they retained the excellent handling characteristics of their sporting cousins and were practical in use, however, the most important characteristic was that they were fun.
The example offered is one of the first series of M900's released and is effectively brand new, having been registered for only a day in order to obtain a German title. It has therefore only recorded a test "mileage of 366 kilometres.
