James had entered the motorcycle market in 1902 having previously been involved in the cycle industry. During the vintage and post vintage period they marketed a range of four stroke singles and handsome vee twins, however in the post war years they concentrated on the production of lightweight two stroke machines. James had been absorbed into the Associated Motorcycles group in 1951, as had their rivals Francis Barnett, which resulted in the two ranges becoming ever more similar as the decade progressed. By 1962 Francis Barnett production had moved to the James factory at Greet with only the badge, colours and name differentiating the models.
The Captain name had, for a long time, been applied to James models displacing approximately 200cc, during the fifties these had been powered by Villiers singles, however AMC had commissioned the design of a range of two stroke engine units for use in James and Francis Barnett models, to be built in house. The L20 Captain, introduced in 1959 was powered by such an AMC unit and would continue in production until James ceased motorcycle manufacture in 1966.
The example offered, finished in metallic blue, has been the subject, according to the vendor, of a "superb restoration" and is described as being in good condition throughout. It is offered with a Swansea V5C.
