The ultimate six-cylinder derivative of Mercedes-Benz's renowned R107-series, the 300SL was introduced at the September 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show. Equipped with Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel-injection, its in-line sohc M103 2962cc straight-six engine developed 177bhp and 188lbft of torque - outputs sufficient for a reputed 125mph top speed. Sharing the same two-door monocoque bodyshell, all-round independent coil-sprung suspension and power-assisted steering as its V8 brethren it proved notably more fuel efficient than the earlier cars and, fitted with four-speed automatic transmission as standard, it further benefited from improved anti-corrosion treatment and ABS brakes. Only in production between 1985 and 1989, just 13,443 300SLs are thought to have been despatched worldwide.
Finished in red with black upholstery, this particular example is understood to have had only two previous lady keepers prior to entering the current ownership (also female) seven years ago. Reportedly serviced at the time of its last MOT test (June 2009), 'C174 HBA' is said to have "just completed a lovely, trouble-free tour of the Cotswolds". Kept garaged and reserved for summer enjoyment during the present custodianship, the Mercedes-Benz is described as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, switchable sports / economy mode automatic gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and interior trim. While, its impressive array of electrical equipment: "aerial, headlight wash / wipe, Kenwood CD stereo, windows and mirrors" is apparently in working order. Believed but not warranted to have covered a mere 66,000 miles from new (a figure substantiated in part by "seventeen MOT certificates"), it also boasts a hardtop and "barely used soft-top". The original handbook / service book, original Blaupunkt radio (plus instructions), original toolkit / first aid kit and spare keys are supplied with the car.
