Introduced in 1968 as a replacement for the outgoing TR250/TR5 models, the Triumph TR6 proved a strong seller on both sides of the Atlantic. Crisply styled, its smooth flowing lines and Kamm tail hid a cruciform-braced chassis equipped with all-round independent suspension, disc/drum brakes and rack-and-pinion steering. Powered by a refined 2498cc OHV straight-six engine allied to four-speed plus overdrive manual transmission, it was deceptively fast with contemporary road testers recording 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds and a 121mph top speed. Writing in 1969, Autocar magazine went as far as to comment that "Even if the Austin-Healey 3000 had not been dropped, the TR6 would have taken over as the he-man's sports car in its own right".
A desirable home market '150bhp' car, 'XEL 725K' is said to have been restored at a cost of "£34,000 plus" by Worcester Classic Cars Ltd between 2002 and 2004. Having been purchased by the vendor after 11 previous keepers from our Duxford sale in October 2007, he has used the car extensively on trips that have included Northern Italy, Austria, Switzerland twice that included the Stelvio Pass and France on numerous occassions, the vendor has racked up some 30,000 miles in his ownership proving that the car has been very dependable and is testament to the vendor's fastidious maintenance schedule, having it serviced every year by top Triumph buffs Enginuity in Acton. As a result, the history file is very extensive and includes bills 5,000 miles ago for a full gearbox and clutch overhaul and numerous other works.
On inspection, this handsome example presents very well given that the restoration is over 20 years old, with the vendor describing overall body condition as 'very good', but the paint now showing some rather graceful aging to the extent that the vendor describes it as 'good' - but was evidently a showpiece with any prospective purchaser having to decide whether it is really necessary to refresh it! The overall mechanical condition is evidently described as 'excellent' by the vendor with the engine described as 'very good' purely due to aesthetics.
Overall, the car would make a new owner one of the most useable TR6's in existence and would make a delightful summer car whilst facing the dilemma as to whether it really needs for anything other than maintenance.
