1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2000 GTV

Featuring a drivetrain layout that Alfa Romeo had last used on its all-conquering Tipo 158/159 Grand Prix cars, the Alfetta saloon was launched in 1972. Based around a monocoque bodyshell, the newcomer was equipped with independent torsion-bar front suspension, a De Dion back axle, rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Boasting excellent weight distribution thanks to its rear-mounted five-speed transaxle, the Alfetta was initially powered by a 1779cc version of Alfa Romeo's famous four-cylinder 'twin-cam' engine. Widely praised by the contemporary motoring press for its handling and roadholding, the three-box saloon spawned a two-door fastback coupe variant in 1974. Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Alfetta GT was shorter, lighter and more aerodynamic (0.39 cd) than its sibling. Arriving during 1976, the range-topping Alfetta 2000 GTV was reputedly capable of 120mph and helped Autodelta win the Group 2 (sub-2500cc) division of that season's European Touring Car Championship.
This museum quality Alfa has had two owners from new and has a genuine mileage of 13,000. Originally supplied to a director of BP Ltd, Mr G. Davidson, it was transferred to his private ownership when he retired. Fastidiously maintained, numerous Alfa Romeo dealer service receipts from the 1980s remain on file, the coupe had done 12,300 miles by 1989. The second owner purchased the car from Mr Davidson's widow during 1993 and for many years it was displayed in a car showroom. Put into dry storage when its keeper relocated to Spain, the Alfa was re-commissioned in 2009, and after replacement of the battery, fuel hoses, a full service and brake overhaul including fitting new rear pads, a new MOT certificate was obtained. The car was Zeibart treated from new and the rust-proofing guarantee is with the history. This is likely to have been a major factor in preserving the car in original condition, with no welding having been ever required. The coupe also retains its factory-fitted Firestone Cavalino radial tyres and the spare wheel appears to be unused. Although the tyres have been retained for originality, it may be advisable to replace them with some fresh rubber before any serious motoring is undertaken. The handbook, sales brochure, spare set of keys and original service voucher book are also present. This is likely to be one of the most original GTV's still in existence and with a little further detailing should be a potential award winner at Alfa Romeo rallies.
