Launched in 1965, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a bold departure for the Crewe company. Their first monocoque design, it also benefited from olio-pneumatic rear suspension, power disc brakes and GM's silken 400 series automatic gearbox (though, the latter was not adopted until 1968). Such 'new technology' did not encroach on the luxurious interior with its sumptuous leather hides, rich wood veneers and deep lambswool carpets. Performance from the smooth 6230cc V8 engine (upgraded to 6750cc in 1970) was assured, the car wafting forward on a seemingly unstoppable wave of torque. Still immensely cosseting to drive, Shadows offer a genuinely different ownership experience to their mass-made peers.
First registered on the 2nd September 1970, SRH8621 is understood to have been originally supplied in the colour combination of Georgian Grey over Red Leather with a Grey vinyl roof from new. The V5C supplied with the car displays 6 previous keepers, with the vendor having acquired the car from auction in August 2021. The car is one of the last fitted with the 6,230cc engine. Sadly, much of the history has been lost, however, we are aware the car was featured in the television series It's a Sin. Upon acquisition, the vendor performed much mechanical work to the tune of over £7,000 with Royce Service & Engineering, with the bills included in the history file. The vendor now describes the mechanical condition as 'very good' and he has used the car regularly which confirms his belief in the car, the bodywork is overall very presentable and the vendor advises that the original Red Leather interior has worn to an 'excellent' level of patina that has evidently been very well looked after throughout its life with seemingly near-new red carpets fitted. The vendor has advised that the paintwork is overall 'good' but does need some minor attention around some small areas where paint has bubbled or the lacquer has come away, but these would be relatively minor tasks for the aspiring owner that could be addressed during a rolling restoration. At some point the car has seemingly been fitted with a professional LPG conversion and we were impressed by the level of workmanship involved, however, this could easily be removed if one wishes.
Now offered at No Reserve, this presents as a fabulous opportunity for entry-level classic Rolls Royce ownership that has already had much work completed.
