Based in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Cushman Scooter Company was founded by brothers – Everett and Clinton Cushman – during 1903. Introduced nineteen years later, the company’s four-stroke Husky engine was used to power farm equipment, pumps, lawn mowers, boats and, from 1936 onwards, Cushman Auto-Glide Scooters. A familiar sight among all branches of the US Armed Forces during WW2 (with the Model 53 being specifically designed for parachute drops), Cushman Scooters were embraced in the years that followed as a means of cheap, stylish transport. The 50- and 60-Series machines featured distinctive ‘Turtle Back’ styling and step through frames. An automatic centrifugal clutch allowed for ‘twist and go’ operation. Although, having both a front and a rear brake was optional! Not as sporty as some of their European counterparts, Cushman Scooter production ceased in 1965.
Reportedly the subject of an extensive restoration by its previous keeper that encompassed the frame, engine, transmission and tinwork, this Series 60 Model 62 Roadking has been little used since. Imported from America to the EU with corresponding paperwork, it makes for a decidedly rare sight here in the UK.
