Lot details

Registration No: UV 2961
Chassis No: 4/2662
MOT: Exempt

  • 1 of just 11 Four-Seater Tourers known to have survived
  • Featured in marque books: 'Early MG' and 'Oxford to Abingdon'
  • Matching numbers' and very nicely detailed

Introduced in 1927, the MG 14/40 MkIV Super Sports boasted a tuned 1802cc four-cylinder engine, Marles Weller steering box, improved four-wheel drum brakes, uprated suspension (complete with Andre Hartford shock absorbers) and balloon tyres. One of only eleven Four-Seater Tourers known to have survived worldwide, chassis 4/2662 was built at the Cowley Works on 24th January 1928 but not road registered by London County Council as `UV 2961' until the following July. Surviving World War Two intact, the MG was advertised for sale in the March 1954 issue of Motor Sport. Thereafter it is known to have belonged to G. Latham, D.G. Lodmore, Mr Green, T.W. Hart, D. Potter, G.W. Radford, Ian Hutchison and eminent marque historian / author Robin Barraclough before entering the current ownership during February 2005. A letter on file from The Bullnose Morris Owners Club mentions that `the car was part rebuilt by MG and the engine rebored to +0.40', while Mr Radford's custodianship saw it worked on by another early MG authority Phil Jennings and treated to a suspension overhaul, bodywork restoration and repaint.

A prominent member of the Early MG society, the previous owner has enhanced `UV 2961' via the fitment of a SU carburettor (the original Solex accompanies the car), vertical coil conversion, 3.96:1 back axle ratio, new but correct pattern exhaust manifold and steel halfshafts. Enjoyed on various Continental Tours, the four-seater also features a discreet 12volt power socket (for sat-navs, phone chargers etc). Beautifully detailed, the Tourer sports such niceties as a MG calormeter, decorative metal dash border, raked windscreen and octagonal instrument surrounds / scuttle vents. Pleasingly retaining its original CE engine and running well upon inspection, this delightful Vintage MG has been featured in `Early MG' by Phil Jennings and `Oxford to Abingdon' by R.I. Barraclough and P.L. Jennings. Offered for sale with a comprehensive history file, full weather equipment and spares package.
