Introduced in 1995, the fourth generation of BMW's iconic 5-Series (codenamed E39) was praised by the contemporary motoring press for its handling, comfort and refinement. Notable as the first 5-Series to use aluminium in its front suspension (so as to reduce unsprung weight), the E39 also boasted a bodyshell that was forty percent stiffer than its E34 predecessor. Powered by a choice of four-cylinder, six-cylinder and range topping V8 engines allied to either manual or automatic transmission, every model came with airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, power steering and air conditioning as standard. Fast but not ridiculously thirsty, the 535i featured a 3498cc DOHC alloy V8 engine that developed some 232bhp and 236lbft of torque. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds and 152mph when equipped with ZF 5-speed automatic transmission, the 535i (E39) made for a fast but discreet sports saloon.
