Lot details

Registration No: G69 YGM
Chassis No: WBABA91030AL02608
MOT: February 2025

  • Current ownership since 1998 and just 1 former private keeper
  • Offered with a large collection of invoices and old MOT certificates
  • Finished in Top Red complemented to a Black leather and cloth interior
  • Subject to much expense in last 2 years
  • 1 of just 8,000 produced

BMW Technology GmbH was founded in January 1985. Headed by Ulrich Bez, its first challenge was to create a car that encapsulated 'Freedom on Four Wheels'. The resultant embryonic Z1 was never intended to go beyond the concept stage, but the intervention of BMW-AG chairman Eberhard von Kuenheim saw it cleared for production. Introduced at the 1987 Frankfurt Motorshow, the futuristic two-seater was built around a galvanised steel spaceframe with fully detachable composite resin body panels and an airflow-channelling bonded floor. Always intended as a LHD-only, low volume model (just 8,000 were produced), the Z1 featured unique Z-axle rear suspension and was powered by a 2496cc straight-six, 170bhp engine allied to Getrag five-speed manual transmission. Capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds and on to 140mph, the BMW's electrically powered doors could be made to disappear inside the sills, even while on the move.

With just 8,000 produced, this Z1, as offered is a rare and desirable find indeed. First registered on March 1st 1990 with the first ownership being in the form of a dealership demonstrator for Evans Halshaw Chesham Ltd before entering private ownership. The current owner purchased the Z1 over 25 years ago, on 20th August 1998. It presents in BMW Top Red (Toprot) with a part leather and cloth interior with an aftermarket Pioneer stereo, however, the original radio still accompanies the car. The current mileage displayed is some 81,810 miles, however, there have been some issues with the odometer and speedometer in the past couple of years, with the odometer ceasing to work at all sometime last year. It is recorded on the 1st April 2023 MOT certificate that the reading was 81,634. There have been some attempts to rectify the odometer and speedometer issues since 2022. It should be noted that there was an incorrect inputting of the mileage at an MOT station on 19th February 2024, they inadvertently entered 84,810 (not 81,810).

Benefitting from much expense, particularly in last 2 years, the work during ownership includes: October 1999 Stainless exhaust (NB non-standard); January 2004 Repair to left suspension arm; January 2006 Jump start terminals; August 2006 Rear radius arm bushes; April 2009 Immobiliser; May 2011 Battery disconnect; September 2013 Water pump; March 2015 Refurbished wheels, cleaned the brakes, timing belt and water pump fitted, aligned body panels, repair to the front bumper by RKV Holland; September 2017 N/S/R brake repair; May 2018 Rear handbrakes; May 2019 MOT; April 2022 MOT; SORN during COVID, June 2022 Speedo check by DMW; August 2022 Front cross member, bushes, shock absorbers; February 2024 Heater matrix changed by DMW. In addition, a new battery was fitted in 2022.

The Z1 is offered accompanied by a reproduction repair manual, an original owner’s wallet with handbooks and service booklet with 20 entries, a large collection of invoices, old MOT paperwork, an older V5C and the current V5C Registration Document.
