Lot details

Registration No: G290 OGN
Chassis No: YS3AD75L9L7008171

  • Recently recommissioned
  • 'Time warp' example including factory number plates

"There is a decisively sporting edge to the Saab's handling and ride. The steering is beautifully weighted and geared, turn-in crisp - almost too keen on first acquaintance. In the dry, understeer is well contained and when the surface is greasy the nose still tucks in readily. Ill judged applications of the throttle bring the expected widening of line but the chassis reacts swiftly to a closed throttle, helpfully balancing the situation with a little slip at the rear" (Autocar & Motor, February 1989)

Introduced in 1984, the Saab 900 Turbo 16 benefited from a new sixteen-valve cylinder head that boosted power and torque to 175bhp and 201lbft respectively. Sharing the same basic underpinnings as its lesser siblings, it featured coil-sprung double-wishbone independent front suspension, a Watts-linkage located beam rear axle (complete with Panhard rod), four-wheel disc brakes and power assisted rack and pinion steering. Updated in 1987 with the braking system from its 9000 series big brother and a subtle restyle (headlights, grille and bumpers), the following year saw it adopt water-cooled Mitsubishi TE-05 turbochargers. More durable than their Garrett AiResearch predecessors, they were also less prone to lag. Reputedly capable of over 130mph and 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds, the T16 has gone on to attract something of a cult following since ceasing production in 1993.

Still wearing its original Valley Saab number plates, this remarkable ‘time warp’ 900 Turbo 16 Convertible has had just one owner and covered a mere 6,000 miles from new. Finished in Red with Beige leather upholstery and a Black power soft-top, the four-seater’s specification also encompasses a heated glass rear windscreen, heated front seats and the preferred five-speed manual gearbox. Taken off the road and dry stored for the best part of two decades, ‘G290 OGN’ was recommissioned late last year passing a MOT test with ‘no advisories’ on 22nd December 2023. Worthy of close inspection, this remarkable and increasingly collectible Saab is offered for sale with a V5C Registration Document, original book pack and the aforementioned MOT certificate.
