The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was built in 1901 by the Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch having previously manufactured bicycles, lawnmowers and stationary engines. Under various ownership, the name has continued through to the present day making it one of the longest-lasting names in the two-wheeled world. The 700cc Constellation was one of the last British-made models produced in the Redditch factory before its eventual closure in the mid sixties. The large capacity parallel twin design has recently made a comeback with the Indian made 650 proving very popular with a new generation of riders.
This Constellation was owned, ridden and maintained by a Royal Enfield enthusiast who has carried out some neat modifications to make it more usable in modern day road conditions. An electrical engineer by trade, the vendor has fitted a Boyer Brandson electronic ignition kit, indicators and converted the bike to 12v electrics. The Constellation has twin carbs and there are a pair of Davida balance gauges cleverly fitted above the speedo to keep an eye on them. The wheel rims and spokes are Stainless Steel and it comes with chrome crash bars, a touring screen and a period Craven carrier. Last run in late 2019, it will need some recommissioning but once back on the road should make a very usable classic bike for Vintage runs and rallies. The bike comes with a file of service information compiled by the owner as well as a current V5C.
