Produced between 1925 and 1928 by Humber Ltd. of Coventry, the 9/20 was the successor to the 8/18. Both engine and gearbox are separate units, bolted together with a cone clutch in between. The engine has a cast iron cylinder block and detachable head with a capacity of 1056cc. It has external contracting band brakes on the rear wheels and a transmission brake behind the gearbox. Internal expanding front wheel brakes were introduced in 1927, from chassis no. 4401 on. Engine oil circulation is by pump and troughs for the crankshaft and dippers for the big ends. Cooling is by thermo-syphon, with no water pump or thermostat; this is very effective with no overheating problems. Typically a 9/20 will top 45mph and cruise at 35-40mph. Petrol consumption is around 30-35mpg. The body styles available initially were a Tourer, a Saloon and a 2//3 Seater. A fabric Saloon was introduced in 1928. The chassis numbers were L2401-5850.

This lovely Humber 9/20 Tourer was delivered new on 25^th of March 1926 to a Mr H. Sedgewick of Halifax. It then passed into the ownership of Mr T.R. Nicholson in March 1959 and of Mr P.D. Hoppe in September 1959. In April 1960, ‘CX 8165’ was sold to Mr J.A. Russell of Harrow who kept the car until selling it to Mr D.J. Diffey in July 2001. Under Mr Diffey’s ownership ‘CX 8165’ was subjected to a full body-off restoration which was completed in 2014. The current vendor bought ‘CX 8165’ in July 2015 and has mainly used it for local classic car meetings. Accompanying the car is a history file which contains a Brown continuation log book, current and previous V5Cs, old invoices dating back to 1965, an original ‘Atmos Carburettor’ handbook, photographic evidence of the restoration and several technical drawings. During the photoshoot, ‘CX 8165’ started on the button and ran very smoothly. Both gearbox and brakes worked well during the short test drive.
