According to information supplied by the vendor, this particular Greeves is the twenty-fourth out of twenty-seven Silverstone RBS machines built (hence its 24RBS 115 frame number). One of three such bikes ordered by dealers Lawton & Wilson on 30th July 1963, it was not despatched by the Essex works until 10th September 1964. Reputed to have been the second racing bike owned by Tom Herron, the thrice Isle of Man TT winner is also thought to have been responsible for upgrading it with a RCS-type front brake and long distance fuel tank. Certainly, this latter supposition seems credible given that the tank sports Tom Herron Racing graphics (whose authenticity has apparently been confirmed by historian Mick Walker). Reportedly treated to an extensive mechanical rebuild shortly after acquisition by the previous keeper in 1994, the time-warp Silverstone was found to carry a four-gear cluster in its five-speed Albion 'box and points / coil ignition in place of the factory-specified Steffa flywheel magneto (both popular period modifications). Returning to the track for a Mallory Park practice day in March 1996, it also participated in that year's Silverstone Classic Festival where it was supposedly "found to be very fast with excellent handling". Dry stored ever since, the RBS still pleasingly retains much of its original patina (though, it now boasts a more modern Interspan dry cell ignition system). Formally registered with the CRMC, we are advised that it will require new tyres and general re-commissioning (freeing up of the piston rings etc) prior to race use. Otherwise said to be in good overall condition, this rare 250cc single is offered for sale with sundry bills.
