By 1980 the Yamaha XS750 was coming under increased pressure from rival products. The triple had from its announcement proved popular with those seeking a sports-tourer that lent more towards the tourer than sportster, thanks largely to the excellent shaft drive. Suzuki had responded to the XS750 with the introduction of the shaft driven GS850 four in 1979 which offered better performance for a similar price. In response Yamaha introduced an enlarged version of the XS750 for the 1980 season in the form of the XS850. The new machine, which actually displaced 825cc benefited from a stronger crankshaft, improved lubrication and better cooling thanks to the addition of an oil cooler. The frame was reinforced to cope with the increase in both power and torque available from the larger engine and a 24 litre fuel tank, previously offered as an option on the XS750, became a standard fitment.
The one owner from new example offered dates from 1980 and is described by the vendor as being in "perfect" condition. It has recorded only 29701 kilometres and is offered with German papers.
