As a result of the Suez crisis, Britain found itself back on petrol rationing by 1956. BMC's Leonard Lord recognised the urgent need for a small car with ground-breaking economy. Within a year, the now famous team of Issigonis, Daniels and Kingham had designed and built a prototype of ADO 15 (Austin Drawing Office project number 15), and what's now known as the Mini was launched just two years later. Over time, BMC/British Leyland built a variety of versions, including: the Traveller, the sporty Cooper and Cooper S models, the Clubman and 1275 GT, the Pickup, Mini Van and the Moke. The utilitarian Moke (slang for Donkey) was conceived as a light military vehicle and, codenamed The Buckboard, was tested by all three branches of the armed forces. However, its relatively low ground clearance ruled it out of most combat situations and its forte was as a beach buggy in such popular holiday destinations as the Seychelles and the Caribbean. Some 50,000 examples were manufactured all told - UK production ran from 1964 to 1968, while they were also built in Australia and Portugal. The monocoque shell comprised a pair of box-section pontoons connected by the floorpan and firewall. Engine, gearbox, suspension etc were standard Mini components, making for economical service and repair.
The right-hand drive manual Moke offered was manufactured in 1967 and is finished in bright Yellow with Black trim. The four-seater has been in the vendor's care for eight years, during which time it has reportedly attended numerous classic steam rallies. We are told that the engine was changed to a 1275cc unit in 2008 and the vehicle treated to an extensive refurbishment as recently as this year. The work encompassed a professional respray and welding, plus the fitting of many new parts, including: radiator; battery; exhaust; a range of engine, clutch, brake and suspension items; hood and side covers; windscreen and seat covers. The sale includes the original 850cc engine (that's evidently in running order and reputed to have covered just 7,000 miles from new), tow hitch and A-frame. The vendor considers this smart-looking Moke to have "good" coachwork, paintwork, engine and transmission and the vehicle is taxed and MOT'd into April next year.
PLEASE NOTE: The MOT for this vehicle expires March 2012.
