Vintage and modern classics lead the way at latest H&H sale

  • More than £1.4 million in total sales achieved with vintage and modern marvels taking the spotlight
  • Bespoke ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ Evocation, ex-Maharaja 1926 Rolls Royce Phantom I and low mileage 2012 McLaren MP4-12C proved to be top sellers
  • 1972 Dri-Sleeve Bugatti Type 37 Evocation sells for more than 75 per cent over its lower estimate

77 collector cars from across the decades were successfully hammered away at H&H Classics' Pavilion Gardens auction on 26 July, with particularly strong results for some of the oldest and newest vehicles on offer.

Indeed, with total sales exceeding £1.4 million, a bespoke ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ Evocation, 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom I and 2012 McLaren MP4-12C were top sellers on the day fetching £174,375, £68,625 and £58,500 respectively, all three selling above their lower estimates.

Commenting on the sale, Damian Jones, senior motorcar specialist at H&H Classics said, “Over the last 30 years, we’ve established an enviable reputation for offering a truly eclectic mixture of cars spanning all ages. This particular auction epitomises that reputation with two of the oldest and youngest cars on offer achieving the highest prices on the day. These results really are testament to the breadth of our clientele and they level of trust they place in us to achieve the very best prices for them.”

Other notable results included a 1972 Dri-Sleeve Bugatti Type 37 Evocation, a beautifully crafted nod to the golden age of racing, which sold for £26,438, more than £11,000 over its lower estimate. In a similar vein, an iconic 1963 Volvo P1800 S realised £31,500, also exceeding expectations by more than 50 per cent. Its sibling, a 1970 Volvo P1800 E, wasn't far behind, fetching £16,312, more than a third over its pre-sale estimate.

“It was great to see so many enthusiastic participants at the auction,” added Jones. “There’s nothing quite like the buzz of the saleroom on auction day and I would like to thank everyone who entered or bid on one of the lots, as well as those who simply watched from the side lines. The sheer numbers in attendance really did emphasise the enduring popularity that classic and modern performance cars continue to hold with the British public and we are very much looking forward to our next sale in September.”

Several other classic beauties found new homes with prices to match their stature. The ever iconic 1970 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Roadster revved up £53,438, the luxurious 1997 Bentley Continental T commanded a sum of £45,000, the stylish 1975 Porsche 911 S Targa found its mark at £42,750, and another 1970 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 2+2 was hammered away for £47,250.

With eyes set on the future, H&H Classics is already gearing up for its showcase 30th anniversary auction at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, in September. With limited spaces available, classic car owners looking to consign their vehicle to the sale are encouraged to do so at the earliest opportunity by contacting H&H directly on 01925 210035 or visiting www.handh.co.uk
