Historic Guinness Collection heads to auction

• Five vehicles owned by the Guinness family to be auctioned by H&H Classics

An historic collection of classic cars, currently owned by the Guinness family, is set to captivate automotive enthusiasts and collectors alike when they are offered for sale on 14 June 2023 at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

The five-car collection being sold by H&H Classics is among the 134 cars set to cross the block at the highly anticipated auction event.

“Every vehicle in the Guinness Collection possesses a unique character and represents a significant era in automotive history,” comments Paul Cheetham, motor car specialist, H&H Classics. “Having been carefully preserved by the Guinness family, these cars carry with them an exceptional provenance and an intriguing story that adds to their allure and appeal.”

The centrepiece of the collection, an exquisite 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Shooting Brake is a true masterpiece of British automotive craftsmanship. The elegant and timeless vehicle showcases the epitome of luxury and refinement, embodying the spirit of the golden era of motoring. Once owned by the Rt Hon Alan Clark MP, and more recently used on the Elveden Estate for shoots, the Rolls-Royce has undoubtedly seen some interesting trips and carried some fascinating characters.

Once dubbed as “Fashion Car of the Year” by the New York Fashion Academy, the Ford V8 Custom offered as part of the collection represents a stunning example of automotive elegance and power from the post-war era. This particular V8 Custom was supplied in right-hand drive to Ireland where Rupert Guinness, 2nd Earl of Iveagh, purchased the car new. Finished in Feather Grey with Brown interior upholstery, the car has remained within the Guinness family ever since.

Joining the line-up is the 1954 MG TF 1500, a beloved classic that exudes charm and nostalgia. The car boasts matching chassis and engine numbers and was subject to a comprehensive restoration in the 1990s. The car was acquired into the Guinness Collection in 1997, where it saw minimal mileage increase. Only 3,400 examples with the 1500 engine were ever produced, making it a rare find in any collection.

The collection also includes a charming 1990 Citroen 2CV6 Dolly, a beloved French classic known for its distinctive design and timeless appeal. The example on offer has achieved just 32,775 miles from new and has undergone £1,300 worth of cosmetic and mechanical improvements.

Completing the collection is a 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 Wolf 'Remus', a testament to off-road capability and adventure. Residing in the Guinness family since 2020 at the end of its renovation, the Land Rover has covered around 73,000 miles. Land Rover specialists AJS Land Rovers provided the 110 with a comprehensive restoration including sand blasting, powder coating, chassis painting and a plethora of engine upgrades.

The auction of the Guinness Collection at the Imperial War Museum promises to be a landmark event for automotive enthusiasts and collectors. With their exceptional heritage, captivating stories, and superb craftsmanship, these cars are certain to attract the attention of all enthusiasts.
