Highly original Jaguar SS100 flies away at Duxford sale

20/06/2024

  • Classic car auction grosses more than £2million
  • Highest valued lot, a 1938 Jaguar SS100 2 ½-litre sells for £225,000
  • Trio of early Lotuses from Graham Nearn estate all sell above their pre-sale estimates

More than 70 classic, collectible and performance cars with a combined value of more than £2million were successfully hammered away at H&H Classics latest auction, held at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford on 19 June.

A stunning 1938 Jaguar SS100 2 ½-litre that had belonged to just two families for almost all its life was the top-price seller on the day. The matching-numbers, highly original example that is believed to have covered just 20,000 miles from new, was sold for a fantastic £225,000.

Also off to a new home for a six-figure sum was a 1904 Bayard Type AC2K twin cylinder. Believed to have been registered in West Sussex it had previously been dated by the Veteran Car Club and arrived at the sale in highly original order. Restored by a previous owner it had taken part in – and completed – several Brighton Runs, and eventually sold for £128,150, almost £50,000 over its pre-sale lower estimate.

“We’re incredibly pleased to have generated some superb results for our vendors,” comments Damian Jones, director, H&H Classics. “With a saleroom that was packed with knowledgeable and passionate enthusiasts, as always there was a lively atmosphere which resulted in some exciting bidding wars and marvellous results. We’d like to thank everyone who joined us on the day, either in person or online, and made it such a memorable event.”

A trio of early Lotuses from the estate of Graham Nearn, the late founder of Caterham Cars, offered unrivalled opportunities for followers of the marque which was reflected in all three cars selling for well above their pre-sale estimates. The oldest of the three, a 1952 Lotus MkVI prototype which had competed at Silverstone, was bought for £45,000. A 1953 MkVI ‘works demonstrator’, that had been raced at Goodwood by Colin Chapman sold for £41,000, and a 1960 7 Series I sold for £32,625.

Another lot with motoring celebrity connections, a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL first owned by Sir Stirling Moss, found a new home at £11,250 and was well worth bringing back to its former glory.

Other cars to sell above their estimates included a 1932 Lagonda 16/80 S-Type Special Six T5 Tourer, which had just two owners since 1961, which sold for £33,188, more than £10,000 over its lower estimate, a 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 formerly owned by the editor of ‘911 & Porsche World’ magazine, which fetched £29,812, and a 1989 Lotus Esprit Turbo with just 37,000 recorded miles, which sold for £19,688, nearly £4,000 over its lower estimate.

Classic and performance cars owners looking to enter a vehicle into H&H Classic’s next auction, which takes place on 24 July at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, can contact the auctioneers on 01925 210035.
