  • Collectable German classics, including an extremely rare example, among desirable models going under the hammer
  • The H&H Classics auction takes place on Wednesday 9th October at the Imperial War Museum Duxford in Cambridgeshire
  • Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche and Volkswagen among the marques taking centre stage alongside British classics and other overseas manufacturers

Highly desirable classic cars from Germany’s most famous marques are taking centre stage with H&H Classics as it hosts its next classic, vintage and performance car auction in Cambridgeshire later this month.

Among the collectable lots going under the hammer on Wednesday 9th October at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, are a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL and a 1939 Frazer Nash-BMW 327/80 Cabriolet, just one of 19 examples manufactured.

James McWilliam, sales manager, H&H Classics, said: “German car manufacturers have been at the forefront of automotive engineering ever since the dawn of the motor car, so we’re delighted to offer some wonderful examples from the land of the autobahn.”

The stunning 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL, estimated at £150,000-£200,000, is one of only 562 cars built across all right-hand drive markets and has been the subject of an extensive three-and-a-half year restoration, photographically documented.

James said: “This is the best example 190SL we have encountered and it’s potentially eligible for the highly prestigious Mille Miglia Storica so it’s a pleasure to bring it to auction.”

The extremely rare 1939 Frazer Nash-BMW 327/80 Cabriolet, estimated to fetch between £130,000-£150,000, is believed to be just one of 12 surviving examples. It was part of BMW UK’s historic fleet from 2015-2022 and displayed at various events with BMW. It was also recommissioned by BMW in 2022.

Mercedes-Benz is represented again with a 1968 280 SE Coupe that has enjoyed an extensive marque specialist restoration, and is estimated at £70,000-£80,000.

The same estimated value has been given to a beautiful 1964 Porsche 356 C that was formerly part of the Aalholm Automobil Museum in Denmark. It is supplied with an extensive history and many original parts.

Among the BMW’s being offered in the auction is a 1974 E9 3.0 CSi, considered a design classic and one of the most stylish Coupes produced by any carmaker in that decade. Estimated at £45,000-£55,000, it is presented in the eye-catching combination of Polaris Silver Metallic with Black leather upholstery.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen enthusiasts have the opportunity to bid on an exquisite 1962 Karmann Ghia 1200 Cabriolet that has benefitted from a bare-metal restoration. It is another design classic and has been estimated between £32,000-£38,000.

James added: “The lots highlighted are just some of the German classics looking to find new homes on Wednesday 9th October. They are joined by plenty of British classics and other overseas manufacturers, so it promises to be an exciting auction.”

All lots will be available to view in person at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford from midday on Tuesday 8th and from 9am on Wednesday 9th October, while the sale then commences at 1pm. Anyone looking to bid on one of the magnificent lots can do so in person, online, by telephone or by leaving a commission bid.
