The FIM had announced that from 1988 the 125cc Grand Prix class would be restricted to machines with a single cylinder engine and a maximum of 6 gears. Honda had campaigned a prototype machine during the 1987 season with Ezio Gianolo in the saddle of what was to become known to the world at large as the RS125 when a production version was offered for sale in 1988. In the years since the little Honda has won at all levels of competition from club races to Grand Prix.

Although it has been subject to continual development and a major revision the model has remained true to the original design concept with a two-stroke power unit utilising reed valve induction housed in an alloy beam frame remaining a constant. 1990 had seen the introduction of a braced swinging arm and a move to magnesium wheels in place of the spoked items previously employed. These changes were followed for the 1991 season by an increase in carburettor size to 38mm, revisions to the engine and improved suspension front and rear. The next three seasons saw detail improvements before a more radical revision took place in 1995 when a balancer shaft, cassette type gearbox and a rising rate monoshock were adopted.

The example offered dates from the third year of production and is attractively presented in Castrol Honda colours, it is described as being in "good original overall condition".
