Lot details Registration No: XSV 732 Chassis No: HDC468243 Mot Expiry: April 2012
The first post-war MG was the TC. It bore great similarity to the pre-war TB and was fitted with basically the same 1250cc OHV XPAG engine. It was superseded by the TD in 1950. Though visually similar to the earlier cars, it was built around a more modern chassis derived for the Y-Type Saloon. The benefits included coil-sprung independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering, smaller 15-inch disc type road wheels and the option of LHD. The newcomer also boasted a hypoid bevel rear axle, hidden scuttle reinforcement hoop and twin leading shoe front brakes, and was five inches wider than its predecessor. Bumpers and over-riders joined the list of standard equipment. By the middle of 1950, a MKII TD was produced alongside the standard car. It featured a range of optional upgrades including: an engine of 8.0:1 compression ratio giving 57bhp, twin fuel pumps, revised dampers, higher final drive ratio etc, and it was this specification on which the TF of 1953 was based. Now highly sought after, the newcomer was in fact an interim model pending the arrival of the all new MGA two years later. Fared-in headlights and a sloping radiator grille ensured more modern looks, while a new pressurised cooling system meant the external radiator cap was now a dummy. For 1954, the engine capacity was enlarged to 1466cc, endowing the car with an extra 6bhp. Models fitted with this new so-called XPEG engine were dubbed TF1500s. The model gave way to its all new successor in April 1955 after a total of 9,602 TFs had been produced, 3,400 of which were TF1500s.
`XSV 732' is a TF1500 built in 1954. The coachwork is Ivory White, the interior finished in Green leather and she rides on period correct wire wheels. The current registered owner (now deceased) acquired the MG in 1992, when we understand it was repatriated from California - he would appear to have been the third keeper. The vendor believes the car to have been the subject of an older restoration and considers the bodywork, paintwork, trim, engine and gearbox to still be "very good". The MOT is valid into April 2012.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
