For many, the iconic 930 Turbo is, and always will be, the ultimate version of the air-cooled Porsche 911. Launched at the 1973 Paris Auto Show and available for delivery some two years later, the car was developed from the Carrera 2.7RS, although with a larger 3.0 Litre Flat Six power unit and - thanks to experience with the 917/30 Can-Am program, the era-defining status symbol that is Turbo charging. The rear brakes were derived from the 917 race car and the bodywork was given a full aerodynamic remodel to produce what is possibly the most aggressive looking Porsche ever built, featuring extra-wide rear arches and a 'whale-tail' rear win. In 1978 Porsche increased the size of the cylinder bores by 2mm resulting in 3,299cc of overall displacement and added an air-to-air intercooler which required a re-model of the whale-tail to allow it to be mounted which created the side-profile that instantly conjures a huge amount of nostalgia for anybody who glances at it. Today, good 930s are increasingly appreciated with values rocketing throughout the past decade for good examples and, thanks to fantastic Germanic build quality, they are known as a very reliable driver's car.
An original C-16 (UK specified) car, chassis 93A0070151 was first registered in the UK on the 20th October 1980 and is understood to be an original triple-black colour schemed car. Much of the early history of the car has been lost during the passing of time, as is common for the era when wide braces, Italian designer suits and suitcase sized mobile phones were all the rage and the 930 Turbo became the 'must have' symbol of success. However, the vendor has confirmed that previous to the car entering his custodianship in 2010, it was owned by a Russian telecommunications tycoon who so aptly kept the car at his private residence in Monaco and there are four previous keepers claimed on the V5C. Upon his acquisition of the car, the vendor entrusted the car to highly praised Porsche specialists 911 Triple R Ltd and Chris Turner Ltd for a painstaking overhaul of the bodywork, all mechanical parts and interior trim to a near concours standard with a huge stack of invoices in the history file and the vendor believes that he spent around £60,000 in total. Today, the car displays just over 74,300 miles on its odometer which appears correct, however even this mileage could be a complete anachronism against the car's condition, such is the quality of the work performed - and the vendor has confirmed that he has covered a mere 2,000 miles since the completion of the works.
On inspection, we were very pleased to be presented with an extremely pleasing to the eye example of this iconic car that appears true to the vendor's word as being 'one of the better ones out there'. Upon the vendor turning the key, the flat six started immediately settled to a smooth idle quickly. Stabs at the throttle not only demonstrated a giddying rendition of revolution increase audibly, but also the visual impact that only a rising red needle upon a black faced turbo boost gauge can give us - we were truly awestruck. The vendor proudly stated that thanks to the extensive mechanical overhaul, the car 'drives like it was built a year ago' now it is run-in. He also stated that the entire wiring loom was also replaced during the refresh and now all electrical components exude German build quality. The raising of the rear wiper and lifting of the bonnet lid unveil a remarkably clean engine bay with the correct stickers in their rightful homes. The vendor has advised that the only part of the car that is not currently working as intended is the air-conditioning which is down to the plastic valve within the front-end which he is sure could be replaced easily.
The interior has been re-trimmed only where necessary and the vendor chose to replace the fabric inserts for the seats for leather as per his preference during the overhaul. All carpets have been replaced and the leather topped dashboard is in remarkable condition. The vendor is of the understanding that the door cards are the original items that were in fine order and simply re-fitted after some much needed feeding of the leather. Externally, the vendor rates the paintwork as 'excellent' and such details as the original whale tail were subject to repair rather than replacement - with all of the correct markings present on this example.
If you have been looking for an investment level 930 Turbo that has been returned to its prime, then this should be a car that warrants consideration.
PLEASE NOTE: The registration number 'TDG 93' is not included with the sale of the car and the original registration 'SOY 180W' will be reinstated upon sale.
