Notable as the last of the ‘Audax’ Gazelles, the Series VI was marketed from 1965-1967 during which time 14,842 were sold. The fastest and most comfortable variant, the newcomer was powered by a five-bearing crankshaft 1725cc OHV four-cylinder engine developing 62.5bhp and 98.5lbft. Wheel arch intrusion was minimised to the benefit of rear seat passengers and ‘no draught’ ventilators added to help cool those up front. Visually distinguished by a revised front grille treatment with Singer spelt out across the top and ‘1725’ badges to the front wings, the Series VI was reputedly capable of some 85mph and could be specified with overdrive or automatic transmission.

Finished in Holly Green with Willow Green strakes and Green upholstery, B706001124HSO was first registered in London as ‘JLK 299D’ on 13^th January 1966. Migrating to Ramsbottom and the ownership of William Collier the following decade, the Singer joined the late Mr Lucas’s collection during 1978. Pleasingly retaining its original interior complete with a Brew Brothers Ltd sill plaque, the Gazelle shows 49,679 unwarranted miles to the odometer. Interestingly, the same mileage reading was shown when the 4/5-seater passed its most recent MOT test with ‘no advisories’ on 27^th July 2016. Not run for years, it will require recommissioning / renovation.

David Lucas (1947 – 2023)

A motor engineer by profession, the late David Lucas amassed a collection of over forty vintage and classic cars, commercials and tractors between the 1970s and his death last year. A true petrolhead, he housed several of them in a private museum which was decorated with an amazing array of automobilia. Drawn to cars with original interiors, he also had a deep love of music and a quirky sense of humour. A champion of the underdog, he eschewed the more famous British marques such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin in favour of Armstrong Siddeley, Singer and Standard Triumph. A stalwart member of various car clubs over the years, he exhibited at numerous events up and down the country. Summed-up by his loved ones as ‘one of the life’s true gentlemen’, David Lucas remains much missed.
